A fun light fixture makeover

My son, who is a huge sports fan and athlete, kept asking me to decorate his room. Of course, it had to be sports themed. When thinking about the details, like a light fixture, I remembered this green barn light that I had gotten at a thrift store, it was just sitting in my basement. I was going to rewire it, and hang it as is, but my son absolutely hated the green! I also had the top to a school house light that the glass had broken on. I put the two together. Added a couple coats of my favorite Rustolem spray paint, in canyon black. And then wrote… “it’s not whether or win or lose…it’s how you play the game”, with this gold marker that I got at Michael’s. Loving the way it turned out! Think how cute it would be if you sprayed a light fixture black, and then drew stars and constellations on it…or a sweet, soft blue or pink and wrote the abc’s or a nursery rhyme….so many possibilities!!

Favorite Things Thursday

My current favorite thing…Waverly chalk paint!!!This week I have been working on finishing a China cabinet that I bought to display my ironstone and other lovely treasures in. I found a china cabinet on the Facebook yard sale last Sunday. As soon as I got it home, I wanted to immediately start working on it. I quickly realized that I was almost out of chalk paint. Being a Sunday afternoon, there weren’t any stores open that carry the Annie Sloan chalk paint that I usually use. I then remembered that Waverly, by Plaid paints, makes a chalk paint that you can get at Walmart. I quickly went to Walmart and picked up two colors, “white” for the outside of the cabinet and “silver lining” for the inside.I have to say that I genuinely like this paint!! This is a good quality chalk paint…I honestly wasn’t expecting it to be very good. It is inexpensive. And the best part, you can get it any time of the day or night, because it’s at Walmart!! I will most definitely use it again! If ever you want to do a quick little project with chalk paint, I would seriously consider trying the Waverly chalk paint from Walmart. There are a lot of cute colors to try!

Have you tried the Waverly chalk paint? I’d love to hear what you think!

Hanging a plate gallery wall without plate hangers and nails

Y’all know that I LOVE to decorate with vintage plates! Making a good plate gallery wall makes my heart happy!!!

Yesterday, my sister asked me to help her put up a plate wall in her entry. Here is her entry before…

Really cute, but she wanted to add a little interest…plates!!! She didn’t want to use nails, so we used command strips instead.

The command strips work really well, we used them in her previous house on a plate wall we did. She had the plates up for about a year, and not one plate ever fell. If you do decide to use command strips instead on plate hangers and nails, make sure that both the back of the plate and the wall are clean. They will only properly adhere to clean surfaces. I always use rubbing alcohol to clean my surfaces before applying the command strips.

We gathered all of our plates, measured our area, and them made a rough draft version on the floor. We decided to have one side cascading down the wall just a little. Love the way it turned out!!!The fun thing about a plate wall is you can add a plate here and there, just whenever you find new plates that you love.
